## How aurora forecasting works

The KP index (0-9) measures geomagnetic disturbance. Higher KP means aurora is visible at lower latitudes. Each location has a minimum KP threshold based on its magnetic latitude (MLAT):

- Tromsoe (67 deg MLAT): KP 1+
- Reykjavik (65 deg MLAT): KP 2+
- Rovaniemi (64 deg MLAT): KP 2+
- Helsinki (58 deg MLAT): KP 4+
- Edinburgh (58 deg MLAT): KP 4+
- London (53 deg MLAT): KP 6+
- New York (52 deg MLAT): KP 6+
- Denver (49 deg MLAT): KP 7+

Revon Aurora goes beyond KP alone with a 5-factor model:
1. **Aurora score** — ML model combining KP forecast with solar wind data to predict probability (0-100%)
2. **KP index** — NOAA geomagnetic activity forecast (0-9 scale)
3. **Darkness** — Solar depression angle calculated on-device (astronomical twilight required)
4. **Cloud cover** — Hourly cloud cover forecast from Open-Meteo (clear skies needed)
5. **Moonlight** — Lunar illumination based on synodic phase (less moonlight is better)
